Troops move in to save Ayutthaya temple | Bangkok Post: news

AYUTTHAYA -- About 50 soldiers have been mobilised to strenghten floodwalls around the ancient Wat Kasattrathirat Worawihan temple in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district to save it from flooding. The soldiers, led by Col Panawes Chantharangsi, commander of the Ayutthaya peace-keeping force, are from the 11th and 25th Cavalry battalions of the 2nd Cavalry Division as requested by Phra Ratchathanintarachan, the temple abbot. As more water is being discharged downstream from the Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat province, water levels in riverside districts of Ayutthaya continue to rise. On Sunday morning, the floodwater had seeped underneath the outer floodwall into the temple ground. It was believed the temple would be saved from flooding.
